MeHT
I've just looked at a promo on their website - man, I don't want to watch a single episode. It's just one of those shows that tells you that living is very, very dangerous. Besides, is it just me or all the research that has been done states that "blah blah hookah smoke blah blah" and none make the point that the tobacco is actually being vaporized and not burnt? mattarios2
That segment sucked. They said it is basically just as bad as smoking ciggs and they interviewed someone who smokes hookah. They didn't have any legit info/specs or anything. It was like 5 minutes long.no talk about how it is burned, how it has no added chemicals or anything.LAAAAME
Kathrynx
If I could watch it, I'd probably get mad at it...lol.I do hope that it gets on youtube or something soon.

Basically they said it wasnt any better or worse then ciggerets.

Kathrynx
QUOTE A Safer Smoking Alternative?Smoking hookah -- a water pipe used for smoking fruit-infused tobacco -- is customary in the Middle East and is gaining popularity in the United States. “It tastes good,” Dr. Jim says after trying a hookah. “I don’t smoke, and I’ve had a few puffs of this and it doesn’t seem to irritate the lungs. It’s not making me cough. I would definitely think that this is better for me than cigarettes.” “I have to say, as a second-hand receiver of the smoke, it doesn’t smell like regular smoke from a cigarette,” Dr. Travis says. “It smells fruity; it doesn’t make you want to cough. Usually if I’m around people at a coffee shop who are smoking, I want to go to the end of the room. But this actually smells quite nice.” Many people think it is a safer alternative to smoking cigarettes because they believe the water filters out toxic chemicals, when, in fact, it does not. According to a World Heath Organization advisory, a typical one-hour session of hookah smoking exposes the user to 100 to 200 times the volume of smoke inhaled from a single cigarette. Even after passing through the water, tobacco smoke still contains high levels of toxic compounds, including carbon monoxide, heavy metals and carcinogens.“You still have all the effects of the tobacco, and it can be potentially cancerous,” Dr. Travis says. “This is not one of those things you can harmlessly smoke after a long day.”I really liked that they said "volume of" and not "equivalent to". When people say "equivalent to" that makes me mad because they are saying that the big list of all the chemicals that are added to cigs are also in our shisha. Volume is a much better term, and more correct in my opinion.Good for the doctors.
ebarnes02
Aren't most of the carcinogens in cigarettes released because of the high combustion temperatures related to actually burning the tobacco while smoking compared to Hookah where you are not supposed to burn the tobacco, but evaporate the moisture ? Scoop
QUOTE (ebarnes02 @ Feb 3 2009, 12:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>Aren't most of the carcinogens in cigarettes released because of the high combustion temperatures related to actually burning the tobacco while smoking compared to Hookah where you are not supposed to burn the tobacco, but evaporate the moisture ?that seems to be the case yes. you aren't evaporating the moisture per se. you are heating the tobacco the point of vaporizing the nicotine and at the same time causing the glycerin to go from liquid to gaseous phase (which creates the clouds). wpw36
also the tobacco doesn't have all the shit added in that cigs do take it from me i am a cig smoker and i feel better after smoking a bowl of nakhla than i do after smoking a cig
chinamon
all i gotta say is the girl in the audience that said hookah is better for you is an idiot.she even said that using a fruit bowl is healthier than a clay bowl? LOL.
chinamon
many hookah smokers keep telling themselves that hookah smoke is better than cigarettes. neither is better than the other.they are both bad in their own way.sure, cigarettes are burned and might have more carcinogens but you dont take huge lungful's each inhale...with hookah, the heat from the charcoal does vaporize the nicotine and molasses/glycerin without burning the tobacco itself but taking huge inhales allows those sticky vapors to get further in your lungs while clogging up the smaller ventricles (or whatever they are called in your lungs) with sticky substance.we can debate this for another hundred or thousand years but i dont think we will ever get a definitive answer. they each have their so-called advantages and disadvantages over the other which is what makes it such a tough comparison.
